An Introductory Overview Of Erection Problems

Causes of erection problems

The majority of men have an erection problem from time to time. The causes of erection problems include physical or emotional stress, tiredness, problems with an intimate relationship, lack of desire for the sexual partner, and anger or stress. Of course there are other factors: we know that the frequency of erection problems increases with age, and the level of testosterone in a man's blood stream has something to do with how sexual he feels, how potent he is, and how firm his erections are. Having said all of that, if a man repeatedly has an erection problem, it may be a reliable indicator that something is wrong.

So erection problems can have a physical cause such as illness, penile injury, pelvic injury, or being caused by drugs (either prescription drugs or non-prescription drugs), diabetes, prostate surgery, spinal cord injury, testosterone or pituitary hormone abnormalities, alcoholism, drug abuse, and some instances of heart disease. Or they can have a psychological cause, including the ones we mentioned above, as well as depression and tiredness. The worry of having an erection problem compounds the situation, because a man will often lose his erection through anxiety - so being anxious about loss of erection is not conducive to keeping a firm erection!

Treatment of erection problems

This is an emotive subject: erection problems are a challenging subject for men to discuss because being able to get an erection and have sex are fundamental to a man's self-image. The lack of this ability renders a man not only physically impotent but psychologically impotent as well. The good news, however, is that most erection problems can be treated very easily: the sooner you seek medical attention, or some other form of help, the more likely you are to get a cure.

The range of treatment options for erection problems is vast: it includes counseling, therapy, penile prostheses, Viagra, and vacuum suction devices, among others. The best way to start is with a gentle treatment like the one described on this website, which relies on various bodily "training" techniques to lessen the pressure of feeling that an erection has to be hard and firm before sex, and allows a man to develop an erection gradually as sex proceeds. This kind of behavioral program can be extremely helpful in controlling erection problems, though there are plenty of other approaches as well. These include Viagra, and even techniques which enable a man to have intercourse with a soft penis.

Viagra permits increased blood flow in the man's penis, increasing the chances that sexual arousal will promote an erection. Viagra is not a miracle drug - and it cannot be used by men with certain heart conditions - but it does permit many men to enjoy good sex once again. The older medications which were injected into the penis are no longer fashionable, since they were less efficient and less pleasant to take. Testosterone replacement therapy is essential for men whose bodies don’t make sufficient testosterone or who have an insensitivity to the hormone. Small vacuum devices suck blood into the erectile chambers of the penis. This takes the form of a plastic tube which is put over the penis: a hand pump is then used to generate a partial vacuum in the tube so that blood enters the penis. Then bands are placed around the base of the penis to keep blood in the erectile chambers so the penis stays erect long enough for  intercourse. Vacuum devices are available with or without a prescription.

The least attractive option is surgery, which may correct problems with the arteries and veins but has a high failure arte, or can be used to implant an inflatable device that simulates an erection with inflatable cylinders.

Prevention of erection problems

There is no real way to eliminate an occasional erection problem but the longer term, more permanent problems with erections can be eliminated or reduced by attention to good health: regular exercise, limited alcohol, no smoking, and a low fat diet, possibly controlled by satins.
